The short answer
At TACOBITE, GTM engineering costs €5,000 to €10,000 excl. VAT once for the setup and then €3,500 to €6,000 excl. VAT per month for operation, with a minimum term of six months. Before that comes the CRM Check at a fixed €3,000 excl. VAT.
Hiring your own person in Germany costs at least as much as an experienced software engineer. There is no salary benchmark for GTM engineers in Germany yet. The closest comparison is the median total compensation of software engineers: around €81,500 a year [1]. On top come the employer's share of social security, tools and the time until the first hire.
What GTM engineering covers
GTM engineering is building the systems that sales and marketing use to find, score and contact their target customers at the right moment. In practice that means: cleaning CRM data, sorting target customers into tiers, collecting signals such as website visits, replies, job changes or tech stack changes, and turning them into a list with a next step every day. So whoever budgets for it isn't budgeting for one workflow, but for a system that has to be built and maintained.
Route 1: hire a GTM engineer
Salary
For Germany and the EU there is no reliable salary data set specifically for GTM engineers; almost all published figures come from the US [2]. A usable reference point is software engineers, because the role requires programming, data models and integrations. According to levels.fyi data from March 2026, the median total compensation in Germany is around €81,500, around €58,700 for juniors with up to two years of experience and around €92,900 for senior profiles [1].
Employer's share
On top of the gross salary come the employer's social security contributions. In 2026 the contribution rates are 14.6% for health insurance plus an average additional contribution of 2.9%, 18.6% for pension insurance, 2.6% for unemployment insurance and 3.6% for long-term care insurance [3]. Employers generally pay half of this, so a good 21% of the gross salary, in each case up to the contribution ceiling. Levies and statutory accident insurance come on top.
Tools and data
A GTM engineer doesn't only work in the CRM. Typical are a workflow and enrichment tool, data sources for contacts and companies, and a solution for identifying website visitors. At Clay, for example, CRM sync is only included from the Growth plan upwards, and data lookups are billed additionally via credits [4]. If you hire, you carry these costs yourself.
Time and risk
Until a new person is hired and onboarded, months pass in which nothing is running yet. And when they leave, the knowledge of the workflows leaves with them unless it is properly documented.
Route 2: freelancers and tools
A freelancer builds individual workflows quickly, billed by the hour or by project. That fits if you know exactly what you need and someone in the team takes over operation. What is often missing is the ongoing maintenance: data quality, new signals, adjusted weighting. And the workflows often live in the freelancer's account, not in yours.
Route 3: have it run for you – our prices
| Stage | What's included | Price (excl. VAT) |
|---|---|---|
| CRM Check | Data quality score before and after, clean-up, top fixes, first signal list. 1–2 weeks, one CRM with up to 20,000 records. | €3,000 fixed price |
| Setup | Ideal customer profile (ICP), tiering, data quality and building the signal engine on your CRM. | €5,000–10,000 once |
| Operation | Outreach by signal and role, weekly account review with your team, ongoing data maintenance, new signals, reporting. | €3,500–6,000 per month, minimum 6 months |
What the range depends on: the number of your target accounts, your CRM and which signals we connect. You get the exact price together with the result of the CRM Check.
Example for the first year: setup plus twelve months of operation comes to €47,000 to €82,000 excl. VAT, with the CRM Check €50,000 to €85,000. With the minimum term of six months it's €26,000 to €46,000 plus the CRM Check. Not included are the licences for your CRM and for any data sources you want to use in addition.

When hiring pays off more
- You already have a RevOps or data team that the role fits into and that can keep maintaining workflows.
- You work with very many target markets or products and need permanent capacity for new builds.
- GTM engineering is meant to become a core part of your company, not just a system that runs.
When having it run pays off more
- Nobody in the team connects CRM, data and automation, and you don't want to spend months searching first.
- You want a running system without first filling and onboarding a position.
- The system and data should stay in your CRM, even if a person leaves.
Costs that apply on both routes
Internal or external: a system on bad data produces bad signals. Cleaning the CRM is therefore always the first cost item. Then come the licences for your CRM and the question of which channels are legally permitted. In Germany, cold outreach by email is only permitted with consent, in B2B too, more on that in the article Cold email in B2B: legal framework and success factors (German).
Conclusion
Hiring your own person pays off if GTM engineering is meant to become a permanent part of your team and someone is there to lead that person. If you want a running system quickly, without recruiting risk and with predictable costs, setup and operation is the cheaper start. The first step is the same in both cases: knowing how good the data in your CRM really is.
